Highly recommended! I've been taking my cats to Lakeside for over 20 years. The front desk staff is very personable and caring. They remember what's going on with my animals and are sincerely concerned about how they are faring. The veterinary staff have always seemed to me to be extremely professional. They are sensitive to the cost of diagnostics and procedures and are happy to discuss justification for their recommendations rather than recommending the most expensive options first which is something I have experienced with other vets. Dr. Rice is great, he has had specialized training in feline diseases and I feel confident that he can diagnose what's going on with my cats. Read Less

Best vets in town I've been a client here for over 20 years and have always been pleased with the care my pets received. Whether it was when Scout had his throat ripped open by a pit bull and Dr. H stayed late to tend to him or if you need to get in the same day because you pet is sick, they are the ones to go to. We had one of our first experiences with Lakeside putting our first cat to sleep. It was a terrifying experience that was made very calm and endearing by the staff and Dr. Poetzel. Since, we have continued to see Dr. Poetzel for his frank approach that has a very good bedside manner. When my oldest cat needed a number of teeth extracted, Lakeside was there, providing great care, incredible communication with me throughout the process, and excellent follow-up. I now have two more cats who have some special needs, and the doctors at Lakeside always treat us with care and respect. Very upset with this place after my last visit. I previously went here and had a nice male vet.  He was extremely friendly, educated and loving to my cats. I found out he was no longer at the hospital, but came back because of the service I received. I had a woman (I will refrain from giving her a bad name) who was clearly not a cat person. She barely wanted to touch the cat. Had to give him two shots and she told me she had to take him to the back because he was "growling" and in her words, "didn't want him to bit me and give him a bad rep at the vet". He was slightly making noises under his breath because she was pinching his skin... nothing abnormal. We left.  Immediately after we got home, he started puking. Called the same place, and were told to bring him in ASAP to check his vitals. Get there, he pukes on the floor in front of the vet, she stood there and said NOTHING while looking disgusted. Told us we should give him more shots to resolve the problem. After about 10 minutes of debating, we finally asked if she was going to check his vitals she said "oh well sure, I can". Wouldn't pick him up from the ground because she "didn't want to upset him more". She said. "He sounds ok". We finally left very frustrated, confused and worried. The lady at the front desk was super friendly and concerned for us. She told us the hours for the rest of the day and near by 24/7 hospitals. I will never go back because of the way the vet treated my animal. FYI- this was just a check up! He received no shots he hadn't received before. Definitely a mix up on their end and didn't even show sympathy. Read Less

My Lucy has been gone for over 5 years but I decided to go back to Lakeside with my new girl, Sally. As soon as I asked about "holistic" treatment for my pet, they gave me the bums rush and sent me packing. I guess they don't want my business any more after all these years. What a shame. Mike P. I've taken my Syrian hamster to Dr Kowitz twice, once because I thought he had a tumor and once because he needed his nails clipped. We absolutely love Dr Kowitz! He's very gentle and kind towards exotic pets, which is important because hamsters can get easily stressed by new environments. Even though Johnny hates car rides and the smell of dogs, Dr Kowitz is always able to handle him easily and Johnny really seems to like him. I think my only complaint about this practice is the waiting room-it's pretty small and when we took my poodle to this practice, she had issues with it as well. Read Less

After calling around, I decided to take my 18 year old kitty to Lakeside, knowing she may not be coming home. They were extremely sensitive to my pain, compassionate to the difficulty of the decision. Not judgmental or pressuring my decision. Provided us time to say good bye. Very, very happy to have found Lakeside! After moving to Milwaukee, it took a few tries to find just the right vet. Dr. Frank has been absolutely wonderful with both of our cats. He is kind and knowledgable, and handles two cats that don't like vet visits like a pro. When I called to give an update after our most recent visit, they informed me that he most likely wouldn't be able to call back until the next day, as he was about to finish appointments for the day. However, he stayed after finishing the shift to return my call and make sure the prescription was working well. While the call easily could have waited, his dedication was quite evident. Pricewise, I find that their rates are fairly standard for the area; definitely not on the higher end, though. Additionally, the waiting room is always clean, and the rest of the staff (vet techs, front desk, etc.) are equally as pleasant. In short, while there are plenty of veterinarians to choose from in the area, there aren't nearly as many that will offer you the kind of service they do at Lakeside. It's quite a relief to know that we've finally found them! Read Less

I was just a youngster when I first set foot in Lakeside (it was the original building at that time, next door to the current location) with my parents and our dog. Since then, I have many happy memories and some sad, yet caring, memories of my time with them. I remember Dr Frank doing surgery on my parakeet and that little fellow living many years after that. I remember Dr Martinez, talking over the care of three elderly cats, when Dr Hoppe left. He was a tough act to follow but she did amazingly and her compassion seems endless. I remember, sharing tears with the staff when we have had to all say goodbye to a dear animal. And now, we get to form a new relationship with Dr. Kowitz who gets to deal with some cute but challenging newer members of the family, my bunnies and guinea pigs. It is nice to have a place that can help with the entire family. Nice to have a place to turn to when things are just not right. Nice to have a place that care. I recently moved to the Milwaukee area from Michigan with four cats and a dog in tow. Five months after our move, we still hadn't established a relationship with a local vet, if only because we didn't have a need to yet. Then my cat Zoe got a UTI, and we found ourselves here with Dr. Frank. He's very experienced and knowledgable about his field, and I really liked interacting with him. A day after Zoe's visit, we got a follow up call from the clinic asking how she was doing.  Very thoughtful of them. Later, when I had another problem with my kitty, I brought Zoe in and Dr. Frank treated her again, taking blood work, and even though he was off on the day the results of her blood work came back, he called me to discuss them with me. He didn't have to do that, but I was very appreciative. A few weeks later we had to take Zoe in again for what we thought was the same problem, and Dr. Frank wasn't in so we saw Dr. Martinez. She was excellent with her, and I really liked her. Turns out Zoe was very healthy for a kitty her age, didn't have another UTI, but Dr. Martinez expressed concern about Zoe's teeth, which was something that I had been meaning to take care of. Zoe is 12 years old and had a couple really bad teeth, and I knew she needed a couple extractions. Long story short, I just picked up Zoe from getting her teeth cleaned and two extractions (performed by Dr. Martinez), and I'm very happy with the service I received all around, from the front desk to the vet techs to the doctors. Yes, they are a little pricey, but you can tell that they genuinely care for your pets, especially when they call you on their days off or just to check up on your pet to see how they're doing. I'd rather pay a little bit more for this kind of premium service and care than have a bargain vet that just does a procedure and ships you out of there. I highly recommend Lakeside, especially Drs. Frank and Martinez. Read Less
